POlly, Put the Kettle On ☜

When I’m scouring thrift shops and antique malls for books and ephemera, I can’t resist flipping through those ubiquitous spiral-bound recipe collections created by churches, schools, and hospitals as fundraisers. Many of them feature a DIY aesthetic that’s quite charming. Almost all include chapter headers, usually amateurishly illustrated in a way that ends up being endearing and full of personality. In a few cases, though, the illustrations are surprisingly accomplished, like this example by Terry Smith for the Westside Guild of Children’s Hospital, 1968. I love featuring the modern masters on this site, but I’m equally excited about showcasing these unknown and unsung artists.
