American Greetings Psychedelia ☜

In the late 1960s, American Greetings—The other half of the Midwestern greeting card duopoly—also produced some dazzling feats of psychedelia. Much like Hallmark’s Contemporary offshoot, AG launched lines like Hi-Brows and Zonk to tap into emerging hippie trends. American Greetings also had the proud distinction of hiring a young Robert Crumb, who worked for them on and off throughout the late 1960s and ’70s.

“My boss at American Greetings kept telling me my drawing was too grotesque. He got me to draw this cute stuff, which influenced my technique, and even now my work has this cuteness about it.” –R. Crumb.
