MAN·I·CULE (‘manə,kyo͞ol), n. a symbol in the shape of a pointing hand used to draw attention to something. Origin: from Latin manicula, diminutive of manus or ‘little hand’.

Here is a lively parade of manicules, also known as printer’s fists, index hands, or simply, pointing hands. Originating in medieval manuscripts as hand-drawn marks used to highlight noteworthy passages, these symbols found new life in the 1960s and ’70s as attention-grabbing icons.
